Abstract:
We'll show how the Kauffman bracket formulation of the Jones polynomial can be derived from the representation theory of quantum
sl_2 via skew Howe duality. Time permitting, we'll also discuss the extension to sl_n knot invariants, and how this picture categorifies to give an elementary description of Khovanov-Rozansky knot homology in terms of certain singular surfaces called foams.
