Abstract:
This talk is concerned with the deformation theory for smooth geometric structures on compact manifolds. I will present a framework for such deformations and state a theorem which mimics Kuranishi's theorem from complex geometry and applies to those structures for which the deformation complex is elliptic. It provides a family of deformations, parametrised by a subset of a finite-dimensional cohomology group, from which any other family of deformations of the given structures can locally be obtained as a pull-back. This `locally complete' family has additional properties if certain cohomological conditions are imposed.
