Abstract
The topological vertex solves the problem of computing all genus topological string amplitudes/Gromov-Witten generating functions on local toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. Through geometric engineering of supersymmetric gauge theories in type IIA/M-theory, the amplitudes are connected to the instanton counting of these gauge theories. The localization computations of the instanton partition functions motivates the refinement of the topological vertex. In this introductory seminar, I will present an overview of the aforementioned connections to set up the stage for the seminar.
