Abstract: I will describe in elementary terms how the classification of 2- and 3-dimensional manifolds is intimately connected with geometry. Starting from Euler's formula for polyhedra I will discuss Gauss-Bonnet and the uniformization for surfaces and how this fits in with the classification of surfaces. Finally, I will explain what the geometrization conjecture (resp. theorem) in dimension 3 is all about.
