Abstract
Around 1975, G. Harder and M.S.Narasimhan introduced a filtration for vector bundles which came to be known as the Harder-Narasimhan filtration. They used it to compute the betti numbers of the moduli space of bundles on a curve. Subsequently this filtration along with its various ramifications became very important in the study of bundles and their moduli as well as other objects such as quiver representations. The aim of this talk will be to introduce this filtration, explain some classical results about it and end with some recent results of Prof. Nitsure and myself about the variation of this filtration in families.
