Abstract: The holonomy of a Riemannian metric controls the parallel tensors on the manifold. Thus Riemannian manifolds with "special holonomy" have a rich additional geometric structure that is strongly compatible with the metric. The study of manifolds with special holonomy has deep connections with many different areas in and outside geometry and is of importance also in theoretical physics, in particular String and M-theory. In this talk I will discuss some basics facts about special holonomy, using 4-dimensional manifolds with holonomy SU(2) (so-called hyperkähler 4-manifolds) as an illustrative example.

This seminar gives an introduction to "the QGM research seminar by Lorenzo Foscolo: Complete non-compact G2-manifolds from asymptotically conical Calabi-Yau 3-folds".

The seminar is aimed at students (PhD as well as Master students).
