Abstract:
Groups have long played a prominent role in topology as symmetries of geometric or topological objects. More recently it has been realized that the process can be reversed, that one can use techniques from topology and homotopy theory to effectively study groups. The techniques center around various notions of a classifying space. My talk will survey some recent developments in this area, and will be aimed at a general mathematical audience.
