In this talk we review Thurston's gluing equations for hyperbolic structures on a cusped 3-manifold. W. Neumann and D. Zagier proved these equations have symplectic properties that are crucial for applications in (quantum) topology. Using certain double covers of the boundary we aim to shed new light on the gluing equations.
